July events in the Monferrato

With the arrival of summer come plenty of opportunities to enjoy wine events. Casa Coppo will not be closing its doors, but will remain open all throughout the season for wine travelers who want to visit the winery and do a wine tasting. Discover the wine events with us in the Monferrato!

The Monferrato and the territory of Canelli will be celebrating their greatest wines with initiatives dedicated to the discovery of the best denominations of the zone, principally the subzone “Canelli” of Moscato d’Asti and Nizza DOCG. In fact, Nizza DOCG is celebrating its official entrance on the market in July 2016.

Casa Coppo, who has always produced these wines, will be at the events with important collaborators and wine tastings to let wine lovers and tourists discover all the nuances and richness of the Monferrato.

BORN JULY 1
FRIDAY, JULY 1 – NIZZA MONFERRATO

nata primo luglio

Mark this date on your calendars. On July 1, Nizza DOCG (100% Barbera) will make its official debut after fifteen years of struggle, studies, and successes to affirm its place as an independent and unique denomination of the Monferrato.

A bit of history

Nizza was born in 2000 as a subzone of Barbera d’Asti. It was created to emphasize the vocation of the barbera variety in 18 municipalities surrounding Nizza Monferrato. In 2002, the Association of Producers of Nizza (Associazione Produttori del Nizza) was founded. Their objective was clear: to develop the Nizza subzone and guide it towards the official recognition of obtaining a DOCG certification, the most prestigious Italian denomination. It would be a crowning moment for this 100% Barbera d’Asti created under a stricter and more selective production process, the best of quality. In 2014, the Ministry of Agriculture recognized the DOCG of Nizza, making it the 17th DOCG of Piedmont.

The celebration

After two years of aging (according to the regulations), 38 producers of Nizza DOCG who are part of the Association are finally able to put their wines on the market. To celebrate the debut, the Association of Producers of Nizza has organized a one-of-a-kind wine tasting. The 2014 vintage will be paired with a dinner held in the central street Via Maestra of Nizza Monferrato, which will be transformed into an elegant, open air restaurant for the occasion. The wine will be paired with four plates prepared by four Michelin starred chefs of the territory: Mariuccia Ferrero of San Marco in Canelli, Walter Ferretto of Cascinale Nuovo in Isola d’Asti, Bruna Cane of I Caffi in Acqui Terme, and Massimiliano Musso of Ca’ Vittoria in Tigliole. The dinner will be followed by a concert with singer Giorgio Conte. All wine lovers may participate by booking a spot through the Enoteca of Nizza (tel. 0141 793350 – Fax 0141 724683,
 info@enotecanizza.it).

The Nizza of Coppo

Casa Coppo will also be participating in the dinner. We will offer our Nizza Riserva della Famiglia as part of the tasting. It is a prestigious label, because its grapes come from the best and oldest vineyards of the winery, located in the municipality of Castelnuovo Calcea in the heart of Nizza territory. A highly limited number of bottles are produced, and only in years of exceptional enological value.

MOSCATO CANELLI AND THE COLORS OF WINE
SATURDAY, JULY 9 – CANELLI

canelli colori del vino

At the beginning of July, the historical center of Canelli will transform into a tasty food and wine itinerary dedicated to Moscato d’Asti, particularly of the subzone “Canelli,” the historical heart of production for this variety and wine. The Association of Moscato Producers of Canelli will present the wines of its members in an historical angle of the city, the Sternia of Canelli, where the rise to the Castle of the town begins. It is an ancient cobblestoned road that begins from Piazza San Tommaso until Piazza San Leonardo, winding through the hills, around houses and small courtyards, and affording fantastic views.

The Sternia will be set up with wine tasting stands and food pairings of the Canelli area. Casa Coppo will present Moncalvina, Moscato d’Asti DOCG “Canelli” at the panoramic terrace of Sternia, paired with farinata produced by the proloco association of San Michele of Nizza.

DISCOVER CANELLI
SATURDAY, JULY 23 – CANELLI AND SURROUNDINGS

canelli

At the end of July, there will be another great occasion to get to know the Canelli subzone. Slow Food will be organizing an itinerary with stops throughout the Monferrato in the “land of Gold”, or in the regions that are particularly known for moscato cultivation, including Moscato d’Asti DOCG “Canelli.” Eleven wineries in the municipalities of Canelli, Santo Stefano Belbo, Cassinasco, and Bubbio will open their doors for events and wine tastings in their cellars.

How does “Discover Canelli” work?

The event “Discover Canelli” has the same formula as the popular Wineries of the Northwest (Cantine a Nord Ovest). Buy a single participation ticket, and then freely go from the point of departure to the participating wineries on your own wine tasting route (no additional costs for the visits or tastings).

Place and time

The meeting point for participants is at 10:00 am at the Regional Enoteca of Canelli in Via G.B. Giuliani, 29. It will also be possible to buy tickets on the day of the event until they run out. Discover Canelli ends at 7:00 pm.

Cost

The event costs €20 for Slow Food members and €30 for all other participants (which will also include Slow Food membership). Payment may be made by check, credit card, or cash at the meetup point.

Coppo Winery

The historical “Underground Cathedrals” of Coppo, part of a UNESCO World Heritage, will be open for wine tastings from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm all day.
